Medical Parasitology and Mycology is the branch of medical sciences about parasites and Fungi that live temporarily or permanently, on or within the human body (host). It discusses the parasitic and Mycotic diseases transmitted from humans to humans, as well as from animals to humans (zoonotic diseases). At the end of the theory and practical courses, students are expected to: 1. Express the general concepts and common definitions in parasitology and Mycology 2. State the shape and scientific names of parasites and Fungi microscopically and macroscopically with an emphasis on parasites common in Iran. 3. Provide a summary of the cycle of life, infection source, and reservoirs and fully explain about common parasites and fungi of the country. 4. Explain the method of transmission for parasitic and mycotic diseases. 5. Express the geographical distribution of common parasitic and mycotic diseases in the country. 6. Name the main clinical symptoms of the mentioned diseases. 7. Name the treatment methods and selected medications for current diseases in the country. 8. Explain about preventive methods for the mentioned diseases. 9. Be able to search the internet and gather information from scientific books according to the time and location of referrals to eliminate the problems in detecting and treating parasitic and mycotic diseases. |

Background of Department of Parasitology and Mycology
Before 1992, faculty members of field of parasitology and mycology were members of Department of Pathology and Laboratory Sciences. From that year onward, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Sciences was divided into two independent departments of laboratory sciences and pathology. In addition, the Department of Laboratory Sciences was divided into three departments of microbiology and virology, hematology and blood bank and parasitology and mycology at that time. Each of the mentioned departments initiated their independent work, and Department of Parasitology and Mycology is now independently performing activities with its five faculty members.
Aim of Department of Parasitology and Mycology
The aim of formation of department of parasitology and mycology is teaching medical parasitology and mycology to students of medicine, paramedicine and related fields at various grades, from associate degree to PhD according to approved program of ministry of health, treatment and medical education and headquarters for cultural revolution and research.
