Course plan Medical Parasitology and Mycology for Dentistry Students |

Duration: theory course, 18 hours (1 credit) |

Prerequisite: microbiology and prerequisites of the mentioned courses |

Setting: 50 students for theory courses at school of medicine |

Main Goal: Familiarization of students with parasites and parasitic and fungal diseases, where a dentist is somehow in contact with patients and deal with them during visit and examination of the patients. |
Specific Goals:
At the end of this theory course, students are required to:
1. Express the generalities and common definitions in parasitology and mycology.
2. Demonstrate the shape and scientific names of related parasites using pictures of atlases with an emphasis on common parasites of the country.
3. Name infection sources and reservoirs and provide a summary of common parasites of the country.
4. Explain the transmission of related parasitic and fungal diseases.
5. Assert the geographical distribution of common parasitic and fungal diseases in the country.
6. Name the main clinical symptoms of the mentioned diseases.
7. Name the diagnosis method for infections.
8. List the treatment methods and medications for diseases in the country.
9. Describe the preventive methods for the mentioned diseases.
10. Be able to obtain information from scientific sources, such as internet and related books, according to spatial and temporal facilities to eliminate their problems in detecting and treating fungal and parasitic diseases.
Course Content and its Order of Presentation:
Theory course: one credit, held in three sections.
The first section: protozoology, including four sessions, as follows:
Generalities, protozoa, including sarcodina, ciliates, flagellates, and apicomplexan
The second section: Helminthology, including:
General introduction to helminths transmitted through direct contact with soil and animals (one session)
The third section, mycology, including:
Generalities, Surface, mucosal, and visceral pathogenic fungi and dermatomycosis (four sessions)
Teaching Methods:
A) Theory course in the form of lecture using teaching aids and demonstration
B) Practical course. While there is no practical course, microscopic and macroscopic shapes of parasites and fungi are shown by a data projector simultaneously with the theory course.
Responsibilities of Students:
1. Active and regular participation in theory classes.
2. Answering the questions asked during classes.
3. Be prepared for written and oral exams.
4. Be actively involved with discussions on various educational topics presented in theory classes.
5. Express their opinions and knowledge about the discussed subjects.
6. Be able to search the internet and study the references about each subject of classes.
Evaluation Methods:
A) Theory course in the form of written exams with a limited number of multiple-choice questions.
