At the end of the theory and practical courses, students are expected to:

1.      Express the general concepts and common definitions in mycology

2.      State the shape and scientific names of fungi microscopically and macroscopically with an emphasis on fungi common in Iran.

3.      Provide a summary of the cycle of life, infection source, and reservoirs and fully explain about common Fungi of the country.

4.      Explain the method of transmission for Mycotic diseases.

5.      Express the geographical distribution of common Mycotic diseases in the country.

Complete Description

This course is an upper division course in medical mycology and a comprehensive study of the fungi (yeasts and molds) and mycoses (fungal diseases). Medical Mycology is an increasingly important aspect of infectious diseases research which addresses all aspects of disease caused by fungi, to be encountered in clinical settings by a physician, medical mycologist, or medical technologist. The course consist of a taxonomic survey of fungi, mechanistic basis of the host-pathogen interaction; fundamental molecular, genomic, proteomic, metabolomics studies and cell biology of fungal pathogens; immunity to fungal infection.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSE:

1-      To know the structural, physiological, genetic, and growth characteristics of fungi.

2-      To understand the principles and schemes used to classify fungi (taxonomy).

3-      negative impact of certain fungi on humans (pathogenicity of fungi and diagnosis of fungal disease).

4-      To learn the basic techniques used to of identification including molecular technique.

Students will be expected to assemble a lab notebook that involves sketches of fungi, and Cooperation in teaching students in technical parts and practical laboratory units.

The practical course is as mentioned above for all fungi.
